Halloween Murder Mystery Party Ideas That Beat Another Costume Party

There is a particular Halloween party that everybody has been to. People arrive in costumes they spent real money on, stand in a kitchen holding drinks, compliment each other's costumes, and leave at eleven.

The costumes were not the problem. The problem was that there was nothing to do in them.

Why a mystery fits Halloween better than any other night

Once a year, your guests have already agreed to dress as somebody else. That is the hardest part of a murder mystery — the bit hosts worry about — and Halloween hands it to you for free.

Nobody needs persuading to be in character when they are already in a costume.

Timing it around trick-or-treaters

If you have children in the house or a doorbell that will not stop, run the mystery late. Start at eight rather than six. The door goes quiet, the adults arrive, and the two halves of the night do not fight each other.

The alternative that works just as well: hold it the weekend before. The 31st is crowded with obligations, and a party on the Saturday before often gets better attendance than the night itself.

Choosing between spooky and silly

This matters more than people expect, and it comes down to your guests.

A haunted, atmospheric mystery rewards a group that will commit — lighting down, music on, everyone taking it seriously. A comic one rewards a group that would rather laugh. Both work. Picking the wrong one for the room is what does not.

If you genuinely do not know your group, go lighter. It is easier for a funny night to turn tense than for a tense night to recover from someone giggling.

What to tell guests when you invite them

Give them the character and a one-line costume steer at the same time. "You are the fortune teller who knows more than she is saying — anything vaguely mystical will do."

That sentence does more work than a page of instructions. It tells them what to wear, how to behave, and that you have thought about it.
